Caterpillar Marine Electronic Engine Controls and Monitoring Systems

These achievements are confirmed by numerous electronic design excellence awards and hundreds of patents. The advancements made by Caterpillar engineers have positioned Caterpillar electronic marine engines as the worldwide standard in marine diesel technology. With millions of hours on the water, these proven engines ensure unmatched performance, reliability, and ease of operation. The ECM uses the information gathered by the sensors which are located throughout the engine and transmission to monitor all aspects of engine operation. Connected to the ECM by the wiring harness, the sensors detect and convert changes in pressure, temperature or mechanical movement into electrical signals. The electrical signals are sent to the ECM. The ECM uses information such as desired engine speed, and load to determine the fuel injection pressure, timing and duration. Based on sensor inputs, the ECM actuates the individual unit injectors to control engine speed.
